There are a lot of people nerding-out on air source heat pumps. Right now, in the UK. Engineers, designers and everyday people are moving from haters, to converts to evangelists. What’s not to love? The technology is fast evolving to improve the efficiency, with configuration often more important than products, meaning people with a brain that works in a certain way have scope to update, improve, and even compete with other ASHP geeks.
Would we say it’s reached sub-culture stage yet? Nothing that dramatic, but there are some very entertaining conversations on LinkedIn and Heat Geek, alongside a lot of heavy technical jargon.
My personal favourite is the ASHP tracker. A group of enthusiasts have set up a group (online) where people can list their specs (product combination) and system set up, and track the “highest scores” over time. This means how efficiently they can get their heat pumps running. The industry standard seems to be jumping from 3 to 4, with some results in the (very low) 5s.
While we do not suggest you start disconnecting cables, or tinkering in any way yourself with your system, it is important you know how to use it properly, which means maximising the efficiency.
